The decision to place an advert in the National Socialist newspaper with the highest circulation reflects the encyclopaedia\u2019s political orientation at the time. At first glance, this advert is nothing special, most likely one of many in this newspaper. However, after taking a closer look, we gained a different impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of all the 300,000 terms in the encyclopaedia, its publisher chose to feature these three in the advert: \u00bbacademic\u00ab, \u00bbworker\u00ab and \u00bbasocial\u00ab (\u00bbAkademiker\u00ab \u2013 \u00bbArbeiter\u00ab \u2013 \u00bb<a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"glossary\" data-bs-toggle=\"popover\" data-bs-trigger=\"hover focus\" title=\"asozial\" data-bs-content-id=\"popover-id-3955\" aria-label=\"asozial - Glossary term\">asozial<\/a>\u00ab). The entry for the latter informs readers that \u00bbasocial\u00ab individuals act in opposition to the community, a reference to the so-called national community (\u00bb<a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"glossary\" data-bs-toggle=\"popover\" data-bs-trigger=\"hover focus\" title=\"Volksgemeinschaft\" data-bs-content-id=\"popover-id-3128\" aria-label=\"Volksgemeinschaft - Glossary term\">Volksgemeinschaft<\/a>\u00ab) under National Socialism. Asocial behaviour becomes antisocial through active resistance (e.g. criminals). \u2013 Unless the state intervenes (\u2191 protective custody), communities can assign asocials mandatorily to communal residences, in particular if they have already had to vacate their accommodation with private landlords. In particularly severe cases they are assigned to community \u2191 workhouses\u2026..<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:30%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-boom-spacer\" style=\"height:2rem\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The selection of terms is by no means a coincidence. It demonstrates the importance of the term \u00bbasocial\u00ab during the National Socialist regime. The publisher evidently anticipated that it would pique the reader\u2019s interest for the whole volume. This can be seen as an example of everyday propaganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The date that the advert appeared is significant. A few days later, the <a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"glossary\" data-bs-toggle=\"popover\" data-bs-trigger=\"hover focus\" title=\"Gestapo\" data-bs-content-id=\"popover-id-3096\" aria-label=\"Gestapo - Glossary term\">Gestapo<\/a> began rounding up between 1,500 and 2,000 men and deporting them to Buchenwald concentration camp. This wave of arrests, which continued until the end of April 1938, was termed \u00bbOperation Workshy Reich\u00ab (\u00bbAktion Arbeitsscheu Reich\u00ab) and targeted those deemed \u00bbasocial\u00ab. Several thousand more people were interned during a second wave of arrests in June of the same year. While these events were not reported in the Nazi press, the advert for the encyclopaedia illustrates that the hostile image associated with \u00bbasocials\u00ab had become embedded in public consciousness.<\/p>\n<div class=\"popovers-wrapper\"><div id=\"popover-id-3955\" class=\"d-none\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Menschen werden als \u00bbasozial\u00ab bezeichnet und verfolgt, weil sie in der nationalsozialistischen \u00bbVolksgemeinschaft\u00ab keinen Platz haben. Das betrifft vor allem Arbeits- oder Wohnungslose, Bettler, F\u00fcrsorgeempf\u00e4nger\/-innen, Prostituierte oder unangepasste Jugendliche. Ihnen wird vorgeworfen, die Gemeinschaft zu gef\u00e4hrden. Bei ihrer Verfolgung arbeiten Beh\u00f6rden wie F\u00fcrsorge\u00e4mter, Justiz und Polizei zusammen. Sie schaffen ein engmaschiges Netz aus \u00dcberwachungs- und Zwangsma\u00dfnahmen.<\/p>\n<\/div><div id=\"popover-id-3953\" class=\"d-none\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Der Begriff wurde von Beh\u00f6rden bereits vor 1933 verwendet. Die Nationalsozialisten verunglimpfen damit Arbeitslose, denen sie vorwerfen, sich keine Arbeit suchen zu wollen. Diese Personen erhalten keine staatliche Hilfe \u2013 stattdessen zwingt die F\u00fcrsorge sie zu schwerer Arbeit und sperrt die Polizei sie vielfach in Konzentrationslagern ein. Allein 1938 verhaftet sie mehr als 10.000 Personen. \u00bbArbeitsscheue\u00ab gilt den Nationalsozialisten als erblich und als Gefahr f\u00fcr die \u00bbVolksgemeinschaft\u00ab.<\/p>\n<\/div><div id=\"popover-id-3128\" class=\"d-none\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die \u00bbVolks\u00adgemeinschaft\u00ab ist das nationalsozialistische Ideal des Zusammenlebens von deutschen \u00bbVolksgenossen\u00ab. Wer dazugeh\u00f6rt und wer nicht, bestimmen rassistische Kriterien. Die Ausgeschlossenen werden als \u00bbVolkssch\u00e4dlinge\u00ab herabgew\u00fcrdigt. Zu ihnen z\u00e4hlen Juden und J\u00fcdinnen, Sinti und Roma, politische Gegner\/-innen, Menschen mit Behinderungen, Homosexuelle, aber auch \u00bbAsoziale\u00ab und \u00bbBerufsverbrecher\u00ab.<\/p>\n<\/div><div id=\"popover-id-3096\" class=\"d-none\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die Nationalsozialisten schaffen die \u00bbGeheime Staatspolizei\u00ab zur Bek\u00e4mpfung politischer Gegner\/-innen. Auch an der Verfolgung von Minderheiten ist sie ma\u00dfgeblich beteiligt. Ohne richterliche Pr\u00fcfung k\u00f6nnen Beamte Wohnungen durchsuchen, Personen inhaftieren, in Konzentrationslager bringen oder ermorden. Sie erzwingen in Verh\u00f6ren Gest\u00e4ndnisse unter Folter.
